“This is Anne Marie! At 20 weeks pregnant I found out she was going to be born with a condition called Bladder Exstrophy. This is a very rare condition in which the abdominal wall doesn’t form correctly in utero, causing the bladder to be exposed to the outside at birth. Mobile doesn’t have a pediatric urologist so I spent many months researching the best location to take her. At 5 months old we traveled to Nashville, TN, to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. There she underwent a 10-hour surgery to repair her bladder. Even though she is repaired, this condition is one that requires frequent follow-up and more surgeries as she continues to grow. She is almost two and we are traveling to Nashville this week for another big surgery. Through all of this she continues to thrive and grow, she is quite the sassy, independent toddler.
Thank you to this foundation, through very stressful times, they have lessened the financial burden of our travels! We are forever grateful to them!”
